Ladies and gents hold onto your hats, because we have some very exciting news to share! Over the past four years, the Lammershoek team has been crafting away at a collection of very special limited-edition vintages that are finally ready to see the light of day.

The Lammershoek Mysteries collection was recently unveiled to a group of industry folks at an event on our farm in the Aprilskloof. To introduce our guests to the singular terroir that shapes these special wines, we took them on a journey right into the heart of the farm we love so much.

We started out with an informal cellar tour and some welcome drinks, and then loaded them all onto our tractor, with our very patient and skilled driver, Jan at the steer. Our team had spent the morning setting up a Swartland pop-up soiree in the dry riverbed where we have hosted quite a few of our own celebrations over the years.

With our resident Lammershoek band set up on the banks, playing their very own brand of Swartland lounge, we treated our guests to an authentic braai experience, with plankie steak, skilpadjies, roosterkoek and an array of other local favourites prepared on site and by hand by our Lammershoek family.

As part-owner Andreas Abold said when he and his wife Sonja welcomed our guests, it is an absolute honour to be able to work with a team who has been a part of the Lammershoek legacy for decades – some as many as 50 years! It is this sense of close-knit community and a shared love of the land that inspires us to create vintages that celebrate a true and unwavering sense of place.

It was a day of laidback delight that unfolded without any pretence and allowed our guests to enjoy our new wines in the very space that inspired it, with winemaker Schalk Oppermann and marketing maven Jonathen Ralph sharing the stories of the vintages we unveiled. In fact, it was such a great success that we hope to recreate it sometime soon – watch this space…

So, without further ado, please meet the five extraordinary white wines that form a part of the Lammershoek Mysteries line-up:

White Mysteries 2017

Chenin Blanc, Viognier & Chardonnay

The White Mysteries features a beautifully integrated blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Chardonnay. Selected from dryland-farmed, non-irrigated vines aged between 15 and 52 years, the grapes are handled separately in the cellar and blended after an eight-month aging process.
The result is an elegant vintage bursting with flavours of chalky minerality, quince, and Granny Smith apples with a spicy undertone on the palate. On the nose, white peach, zest of lemon and lime with lovely floral undertones set the stage for the mystery to unfold.

Die Oranje 2017

Skin-contact Chenin Blanc

Die Oranje is a very special terroir-driven wine coaxed from dry-land farmed grapes yielded by Chenin Blanc bush vines between the ages of 37 and 53, which was then left to develop on the skins for a full seven weeks. This resulted in a wine the colour of a Swartland sunset that boasts honey aromas with nutty tones, founded off with juniper berry and dried orange rind before taking a bow with a big, dry finish. Distinctive, yet refreshing!

Die Harde Blaar 2017

Harslevelu

Die Harde Blaar is sure to evoke some conversation around any dinner table. Harslevelu is a Hungarian varietal that was planted on Lammershoek almost four decades ago by legendary viticulturist, Desiderius Pongraz. This dryland-farmed block yields very little, so we used the basket press to press the berries as whole bunches, left it on the skin to develop complexity and bottled it after 10 months in old French oak barrels.
This left us with a sophisticated wine with a refreshing mouthfeel, featuring notes of honey, citrus fruits and earthiness on the palate, and beautiful notes of elderflower, sour figs and spice on the nose.

Die Varkhok 2018

Chenin Blanc

Die Varkhok is produced from the berries yielded by 53-year-old, dryland-farmed bush vines that number among the oldest producing blocks in South Africa. Planted next to a disused pigsty on Lammershoek, it delivers the best expression of this varietal we have ever encountered on the farm.
The very small berries were carefully picked and whole bunch pressed in the basket press to arrive at a golden vintage with a long, lingering mouthfeel, crisp natural acidity and beguiling notes of white plum, yellow fruit and fresh salinity on the nose.

Die Ounooi 2018

Chardonnay

Die Ounooi is created from the oldest producing block of Chardonnay in South Africa. These dryland-farmed bush vines yield very small berries, which we whole bunch press to yield one very precious barrel of wine each year. The resulting Chardonnay is full-bodied, yet fresh and crisp with a pure minerality and hints of honey on the palate, bolstered by oyster shell, roasted sesame seeds, lemon zest and chalky minerals on the nose.
There you have it – the five brand-new, limited-edition white wines we proudly launched in October 2019.
