Welcome back! In our previous blog post we shared the exciting news of the five singular white vintages that form part of the Lammershoek Mysteries line-up that has been four years in the making. Today, we’re back to introduce you to the five reds that share this particular limelight.

The Lammershoek Mysteries collection was recently unveiled to a group of industry folks at an event on our farm in the Aprilskloof, and now we are ready to let you in on these closely guarded secrets as well.

So, without further ado, please meet the five extraordinary red wines that form a part of the Lammershoek Mysteries line-up:

Die Swart Strooi 2016

Desiccated Shiraz

Die Swart Strooi is delicious hand-made dessert wine prepared from desiccated Shiraz bunches grown on dryland bush vibes. The bunches were slightly pinched on the vine, cutting off the flow of juice and nutrients, and left for four to five weeks to develop into concentrated red raisins bursting with sugar and acidity. The result is a velvety dark red with a structured palate, lovely acidity and a delicious mouthfeel that sings with notes of raspberry, nuts, strawberry and hints of dark chocolate, tobacco and leather.

Die Ou Man 2016

Tinta Barroca

Die Ou Man is a site-specific Tinta Barroca that was created from berries borne by bush vines planted in 1969. This block only yields one barrel of wine per year, but it is unfailingly exquisite. The 2016 vintage is perfectly structured with ripe tannins and an elegant, lingering aftertaste. The bouquet is laced with a combination of dark berry fruit, pencil shavings, hints of chocolate and spice aromas.

Red Mysteries 2017

Syrah, Grenache, Carignan & Mourvèdre

The Red Mysteries is a terroir-driven blend of Syrah, Grenache, Carignan and Mourvèdre. Selected from dryland-farmed, non-irrigated vines, the grapes were hand-sorted, whole-bunch pressed and handled separately in the cellar before being blended after an 11-month aging process.
The result is a vibrant ruby red with a soft mouthfeel, well-integrated tannins and delicious notes of cherry and berry on the palate with hints of flinty limestone. On the nose, fresh mulberry, currants and well-integrated spice flavours with hints of earthy soul complete the picture.

Die Duiker 2017

Die Duiker made from the berries yielded by one of the highest, east-facing slopes blocks of Grenache on Lammershoek farm, which means the grapes benefitted from the cold Atlantic Ocean breezes in combination with warmer daytime temperatures. It was whole-bunch pressed and aged in 500L French oak barrels, which left us with a fire-truck red vintage with a structured palate, fine granular tannins, and a juicy mouthfeel that follows a heady nose of white pepper, raspberry, cherry and hints of petrichor.

Die Onderstok 2017

Die Onderstok was produced from 43-year-old, dryland-farmed Carignan bush vines that were planted by legendary viticulturist, Desiderius Pongraz on 20 different rootstocks. This vintage aims to showcase the true tenacity of these vines that have withstood the test of time throughout the driest of years. The result is a rusty tractor-store red with plenty of red fruit, a chalky tannin structure and lashings of berries, cinnamon, cloves and ferrous notes on the nose.
